Core Needle Breast Biopsy
This is the simplest type of breast biopsy used to evaluate a lump that can be felt during a clinical breast exam. In this method, the patient lies on a bed, and the doctor injects a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once the area is fully anesthetized, a thin needle attached to a syringe is inserted into the breast to collect a sample of cells or fluids from the lump. The patient may feel slight pressure when the sample is taken. After the procedure, a sterile gauze is placed over the biopsy site.
