Thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy involves the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland, a critical organ located in the front of the neck that produces thyroid hormones, which regulate energy production in the body. A healthy thyroid resembles a butterfly, with two lobes connected by a bridge. Depending on the reason for the surgery, either part or the entire thyroid may be removed. Types of thyroidectomy include:

  • Lobectomy (partial thyroidectomy)
  • Thyroidectomy with isthmusectomy
  • Subtotal thyroidectomy
  • Total thyroidectomy

Treatment Method:
A small incision is made in the skin of the neck. In total thyroidectomy, the surgeon carefully considers the location of the parathyroid glands and attempts to preserve them if possible. The thyroid gland is then separated from surrounding tissue and removed. After the surgery, a small drain may be placed in the neck to remove any accumulated blood. Several stitches are used to close the incision and muscles.
