Kidney Transplant

Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure in which a healthy kidney (from a living or deceased donor) is placed into the recipient’s body. The donor kidney typically comes from a family member. If a suitable donor is not available, the recipient’s name is added to a waiting list for a kidney from a deceased donor. The transplanted kidney performs the blood filtration function. In some cases, the body's immune system may attack the transplanted kidney as a foreign tissue, leading to rejection. To prevent this, the recipient must take immunosuppressive medications after the transplant.

Treatment Method: The transplanted kidney is usually placed in the lower abdomen, near the pelvis, below the recipient's remaining kidneys. The renal veins and arteries from the donated kidney are connected to the recipient’s veins and arteries to ensure proper blood flow to the new kidney. The ureter from the donated kidney is also connected to the recipient’s bladder. The transplanted kidney may start functioning immediately, or it may take a few weeks to begin producing urine. If the new kidney does not work immediately, dialysis is needed until it starts functioning. The recipient's own kidneys usually remain in place unless they cause infection, high blood pressure, or become cancerous, in which case they are removed.
