Angioplasty

A non-surgical procedure that requires no incision on the chest and involves minimal invasion. Angioplasty is used to treat narrowing and blockages of blood vessels. In cases of severe blockages, a surgeon may opt for open-heart surgery instead of angioplasty or stenting. Angioplasty is usually performed with local anesthesia or mild sedation, so the patient is awake during the procedure.

Symptoms: Chest pain, severe coronary artery disease in symptomatic patients

Procedure: A special balloon is temporarily placed at the site of the blockage in the artery and inflated for a few seconds to open the vessel. After the procedure, the artery remains open, and to prevent re-occlusion, a stent is often placed permanently at the site of the blockage.
