Pyogenic Granuloma (PG)

Pyogenic Granuloma (PG)

Pyogenic granuloma is an acquired benign proliferation of capillary blood vessels of the skin and oral cavity. It appears as a painless red fleshy nodule, usually 5-10 mm in diameter, that grows rapidly over several weeks. The surface is initially smooth, but can become sore, scaly, or red. PG is usually solitary, but multiple nodules and satellite lesions can erupt. The most common places involved are fingers and face. PG bleeds easily with minor trauma.

Pyogenic granulomas of the oral mucosa usually develop on the lips and gums as painless, slow-growing, pedunculated or painless red papules ranging in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. The surface can be ulcerated with a yellow-fibrinous surface and easy bleeding. Over time, the lesion will turn a pale pink color. Other mucosal sites that can be affected include the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa.

Symptoms:

• Often found at the site of a recent injury.
• Usually seen on the hands, arms, and face, but may occur in the mouth (often in pregnant women)

• Local treatment of pyogenic granuloma
• 5% imiquimod cream
• 0.5% timolol gel and other topical (or oral) beta blockers
• Intralesional steroid injection
• Cold therapy
