Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Polyposis and Chronic Sinusitis (FESS)

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Polyposis and Chronic Sinusitis (FESS)

Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths of mucus in the nasal cavity, usually on both sides of the nose. Sometimes, the size and number of polyps can cause nasal expansion and enlargement of the bony framework of the nose. Polyps are more common in adults than in children.

Symptoms: Chronic nasal congestion, loss of smell, facial pressure, nasal discharge (sometimes), facial pain (sometimes), headaches (sometimes).

Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but chronic infection or chronic allergy (allergic rhinitis), which causes swelling of the nasal mucous membranes and excessive mucus production, can worsen the condition.

Aggravating Factors: Chronic sinusitis or nasal infection, chronic allergies.

Surgery:

For mild pain, acetaminophen is recommended. Aspirin should be avoided, as it may increase the risk of nosebleeds and allergic reactions in individuals with nasal polyps, potentially accelerating polyp growth or triggering asthma attacks.

Corticosteroid medications, either as a spray or oral treatment, may be prescribed for a short period to shrink the polyps.

If you or a family member has symptoms of nasal polyps:

Note: Nasal polyps are likely to recur. If the blockage returns, additional endoscopic surgery may be recommended.
