Cochlear Implant

Cochlear Implant

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that converts mechanical sound energy into electrical signals. This device is surgically implanted in the inner ear and is activated by an external device. It is used for patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2 to 3 hours. The age of the patient is crucial; the younger the child, the better the outcome. The ideal time for a child to undergo the procedure is within the first three years after birth, and post-surgery speech therapy is required for at least two years.
