Septorhinoplasty (Corrective)

Septorhinoplasty (Corrective)

The goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of the nose. If the patient has a deviated septum, it must be corrected simultaneously with the cosmetic surgery or prior to it.

Method: Depending on your age and health, the best anesthesia method will be chosen for you. Then, the surgeon makes an incision either open (across the outer part of the nose, with a narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils) or closed (incisions inside the nose). Through these incisions, the skin covering the bones and cartilage of the nose is gently lifted to access and reshape the underlying structures. If the nose is excessively large, the surgeon may remove some bone or cartilage. In some cases, a cartilage graft may be added. This graft is often taken from the septum (the middle cartilage of the nose) or, less commonly, from the ear or rib cartilage. If the septum is deviated, it will be straightened, and any internal bumps will be reduced to improve airflow and breathing. Once the desired shape is achieved, the skin and tissues are repositioned, and the incisions are closed. Additional incisions may be made in the natural folds of the nostrils to alter their size. For a few days, splints or casts may support the nose as it begins to heal.
