Brain Aneurysm

Brain Aneurysm

A brain aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel in the brain due to a weakness in the vessel wall. High blood pressure, certain syndromes like Marfan syndrome, and smoking are major risk factors. Treatment can involve either open surgery or endovascular procedures.

Symptoms:

  • Severe headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Double vision
  • Decreased level of consciousness
  • Seizures

Treatment: After comprehensive diagnostic testing like cerebral angiography, appropriate medication is started. The patient then undergoes general anesthesia, followed by a craniotomy (removal of part of the skull) where the aneurysm is dissected. Once identified, clips are placed at the neck of the aneurysm to prevent further bleeding.
