Bone Scan with SPECT

Bone Scan with SPECT

Bone scans help in diagnosing the causes of bone pain. This scan is also used in metabolic bone diseases and sports injuries, especially in examining bone metastasis. This scan is usually performed using Tc-99m-MDP radiopharmaceuticals and whole-body as well as triphasic or SPECT methods.

Bone-scan Procedure:

At first, the radiopharmaceptive is injected to the patient through a peripheral vessel and about 3 - 4 hours after injection, the absorption of radiopharmaceptives in the bones throughout the body reaches the appropriate level and the patient is ready for imaging. In most cases, full-body imaging is performed in anterior and posterior shots, but sometimes, according to the doctor's opinion, it is necessary to scan from certain areas or to be imaging from that area by SPECT method.

Scan preparation:

- All previous medical records including tests, MRI, CT-SCAN, radiography, previous scan is mandatory.

- Performing this scan in pregnant women will be done with the opinion of the attending physician.

- The patient does not need to fast on the day of the bone scan.

- For faster excretion of radiodrug material absorbed through bone, it is better for to drink a lot of fluids between the injection and the person's imaging.

- The approximate time between drug injection and imaging is 2 to 4 hours, and imaging takes about 20 to 40 minutes.

- On the day of the scan, the presence of a companion alongside the patient is recommended.
