MIBG Therapy

MIBG Therapy

Treatment with MIBG-I-131 is a systematic treatment in the treatment of some tumors such as pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, neuroblastoma, medullary thyroid cancer and carcinoid tumors. The goal of treatment by I-131 MIBG is to improve symptoms and stabilize tumor growth, as a result, it increases the quality of life and prolongs life.

Work process:

Radioactive drugs that are transparent in liquid form are injected through the peripheral vessel within three hours. Cardiopulmonary monitoring during injection is necessary.  It should be noted that the amount of radiation that reaches the patient during intravenous injection is relatively high. This radiation is excreted in different ways such as urine, sweating, gastrointestinal tract and salivary glands, so the patient is asked to be hospitalized for two days to prevent radiation from reaching those around him. It should be noted that the therapeutic effects of MIBG are not specific to the day of treatment and will continue for weeks after injection.

Necessary measures in MIBG treatment:

-It is essential to have all previous medical records.

-In patients who do not have urinary control, patients will be catheterised due to the excretion of large amounts of urine.

-The following medications should be discontinued one week before treatment: tricyclotic antidepressants, labtoolol, reserpin, calcium blockers and cocaine.

-Due to the excretion of large amounts of medicine through urine, patients should have separate toilets and siphon twice after each use.

-If the patient is a child in close contact with him/her, the use of gloves is mandatory for parents in the first three days.

-During the hospitalization, one of the parents will stay with the child. As a result, parents should note that they must be with the child from the behind of the lead sheild that has been put for the treatment of the patient with a distance of one meter. When they are in the child's room, do not eat the remainder of the child's food and parents are not allowed to drink or eat in the child's inpatient room.

-Patients' companions must keep a distance of one meter from the patient.

-Air travel and public transportation are prohibited for one week. Likewise, if using a personal car, the patient should be with only one passenger.

-Patients bathe every day after discharge, use separate rooms for a week, and separate dining utensils.

-One week after discharge, patients should perform a full-body scan.
