MIBG scan

MIBG scan

This type of scan, which is performed with MIBG radiopharmaceptic therapy, is a suitable and specific technique for diagnosis of some diseases, especially neuroendocrine tumors (such as neuroblastoma, carcinoid, etc.) and adrenal tumor (pheochromocytoma) in children and adults. Moreover, this technique is used examining and recognizing primary tumors and metastasis related to these tumors throughout the body.  It should be noted that along with diagnostic procedures, high-dose MIBG is also used to treat these tumors.

Scanning procedure:

First, the radioactive substance is injected, and after 24 and 72 hours, imaging will be done for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Preparations for scanning and notable points for scanning:

-The patient must take Loughl from 2 days before injection to 10 days after injection.

-The patient should stop taking medications (such as antidepressants and blood pressure medications) a few days before the scan.

-No need to be fast.

-The complication and amount of radiation of this scan is very small for patients and companions.

-The patient should be notified if she is pregnant or breastfeeding.

-All previous medical records such as tests, MRI, and previous scans is mandatory.

-The presence of a companion alongside the patient is required.
