Parathyroid Scan

A parathyroid scan is performed to determine the location an enlarged parathyroid gland. There are 4 parathyroid glands located above and below the right and left lobes of the thyroid and in front of the neck. Determining the location of the overworked gland helps the surgeon to perform the surgery more easily.

Scanning procedure

First, radiopharmaceuticals will be injected intravenously into the patient's vein and at intervals of 20 minutes, 2 hours and sometimes 3 hours after injection from the front of the neck and chest, imaging will be performed. Sometimes the doctor needs to do thyroid scans along with parathyroid scans for comparison. In some cases, it is necessary to use the SPECT method to increase the accuracy of the disease diagnosis.

Ready to scan

This scan does not require special preparation and it will take about 4 hours from the beginning of the admission to the end of the imaging. The patient must have the previous tests and ultrasound with him/her during admission.
