Whole-Body 1-131SCAN

Whole-Body 1-131SCAN

A Whole-body scan by iodine-131 is a tool that can show thyroid tissue in patients' body in two-dimensional form. This scan is used in post-treatment evaluation and as an efficient diagnostic tool for evaluation of recurrence and metastasis of thyroid tumors. Post-treatment scans are usually performed seven days after the diagnosis and radioactive iodine intake, and full-body scans for diagnostic purposes are usually performed two days after receiving low-dose oral iodine (2-5 mCurribly).

Interpretation of this scan can be challenging in some cases due to the limitations of iodine-131 radiopharmaceutical in imaging. The medical centers of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, which are equipped with SPECT-CT devices, have been able to solve these challenging cases.

Patients should eat light food on the day of referral, drink more fluids, use more candy and sour drinks, and be sure to have a bottle of sour juice on the day of the visit. It is recommended to bathe a day before the scan due to the staying of the radiodharmacema. Avoid approaching pregnant women and children.
