Plaque Therapy

Plaque Therapy

In the past, eye tumors were among the diseases considered untreatable.  Upon diagnosis of an eye tumor, ophthalmologists would remove the patient's eye or use radiation to prevent the tumor from spreading to other parts of the body, which would result in blindness. Today, plaque therapy is used to treat eye tumors.  In this method, plaques containing radioactive material are selectively placed on the tumor by an eye surgeon.  This procedure must be performed within a specific time frame to avoid damaging other parts of the eye.  This method preserves both the patient's vision and the cosmetic appearance of the eye.
