Pterygium

Pterygium

A pterygium is a triangular, fleshy growth that extends from the conjunctiva onto the cornea. This lesion results from the benign proliferation of connective tissue and conjunctival blood vessels. If the pterygium is small and does not cause redness or eye irritation, it usually does not require specific treatment, but it should be examined by a doctor for diagnosis. If the pterygium becomes inflamed and causes eye redness, the patient should consult a doctor for medical treatment. Larger pterygia that affect appearance or cause blurred vision can be surgically removed. At Tehran University of Medical Sciences, this surgery is performed by leading specialists as quickly as possible.
