Ptosis for one eye

Ptosis for one eye

Ptosis, or drooping of the upper eyelid, is characterized by the sagging and drooping of the upper eyelid.  Medically known as "blepharoptosis", it has different forms.  If there is excess, puffy skin on the upper eyelid, it is called dermatochalasis.

Ptosis can be congenital or acquired over a lifetime  and may be temporary or permanent. The common treatment for ptosis is surgery, which is performed on the eyelid's levator muscle (Müller's muscle or levator/aponeurosis muscle).

Issues Caused by Ptosis in Children

The most common serious condition associated with childhood ptosis is amblyopia (lazy eye).  Ptosis can cause amblyopia for two reasons:

  • Obstruction of the visual pathway in severe cases of ptosis.
  • Induction of astigmatism and resulting blurred vision. Additionally, ptosis can conceal strabismus (eye misalignment) if present, which can also lead to amblyopia.
