Shunt glaucoma

Shunt glaucoma

One of the common methods to reduce intraocular pressure and treat glaucoma is the implantation of an eye shunt. An eye shunt is a device made of silicone or polypropylene that does not degrade in the body. The shunt allows fluid to exit the eye and be directed to the space under the conjunctiva.  The shunt consists of two connected parts: a tube and a body. The tube is placed inside the anterior chamber of the eye, and the body is sutured approximately 10 millimeters behind the cornea between the horizontal and vertical muscles to the sclera. Fluid from the anterior chamber enters the shunt tube, flows through it into the shunt body, and collects beneath the conjunctiva.
