Glaucoma, also known as "the silent thief of sight," is a chronic and progressive eye disease resulting in damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. One of the primary risk factors for this disease is elevated eye pressure. Disruption in the eye's drainage system can lead to the accumulation of fluid and increased pressure, damaging the optic nerve. The optic nerve consists of nerve fibers that connect the retina to the brain. Damage to this nerve results in vision loss.

Vision loss begins at the edges of the visual field and gradually involves the central vision.  When damage to the nerve occurs, it can take months to years for symptoms to appear, and once vision is lost, it is irreversible.

Glaucoma surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences is conducted under the supervision of leading specialists in the field.
