Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) in Children

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) in Children

An atrial septal defect is a congenital heart disease that occurs in 1-2 births per 1,000 live births. This hole varies in size, and if it is medium to large and there is significant blood flow between the two atria, treatment may be required if the conditions are appropriate.
Symptoms: Poor feeding, inadequate weight gain, fatigue, shortness of breath, recurrent respiratory infections, irregular heartbeats.
Treatment Method: Initially, medical treatment is used, and if conditions allow, closure is performed using angiography or closed surgery. In some cases, if spontaneous closure of the atrial septal defect is expected over time, follow-up and echo exams are immediately recommended.
Medical Treatment: In cases of heart failure, diuretics are used. If there is no evidence of heart failure, medications are not used, and the main treatment is angiography or surgery to close the atrial septal defect.
