Coarctation of the Aorta (COA) in Children

Coarctation of the Aorta (COA) in Children

A congenital heart disease that involves narrowing a part of the aortic wall, obstructing the blood flow in the arteries. The narrowing usually occurs after the separation of the left subclavian artery.
Symptoms: Reduced blood flow to the lower limbs and legs, while the upper limbs experience increased blood flow. The heart works harder to overcome the drop in pressure, which leads to high blood pressure in the upper limbs. Additional symptoms include cold feet, weak or absent pulses in the legs, cyanosis and peripheral blueness, chest pain, headache, dizziness, syncope, and palpitations.
Treatment Method: It can be treated with angiography or heart surgery. The best treatments include ballooning or stenting (angioplasty) during angiography or performing heart surgery, depending on the specific indications and the physician's decision.

Hospital Stay: 15-20 days
