Botox Injection

Botox Injection

Botox is a toxin produced by the bacteriumClostridium botulinum. The active ingredient is a mixture of botulinum toxin type A with hemagglutinin. Botox also contains albumin and lactose and is available in powder form. For injection, Botox is dissolved in saline solution. This drug works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that normally causes muscle contraction, leading to temporary paralysis of the muscle and its unnatural contraction. Botox is commonly used to treat facial wrinkles (especially on the forehead, frown lines, and around the eyes). The effect lasts for 3 to 6 months, reducing wrinkles, but does not cause complete muscle paralysis. Once the drug's effect wears off, a repeat injection is required.

  • Botox is also used to control excessive sweating in the hands, feet, and underarms.

Method: The injection sites will be cleaned by your doctor, and the botulinum toxin will be injected into the muscles using a very fine needle. Depending on the area being treated, multiple injection sites may be required. Your doctor may ask you to move your facial muscles to determine the best injection spots.
