Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

Breast augmentation surgery involves placing a substance known as an implant inside the breast (on or below the chest muscle) to enhance, enlarge, and shape the breasts.

Method: To place a breast implant, the plastic surgeon creates an incision in one of the following three locations:

• Under the breast (inframammary)
• Under the arm (transaxillary)
• Around the areola (periareolar)

After the incision is made, the surgeon separates the breast tissue from the chest muscles and connective tissue. A space is created either behind or in front of the outermost chest muscle (pectoralis major). The surgeon places a silicone implant in this space and positions it behind the nipple. Once the implant is in place, the incision is usually closed with sutures and covered with an antibiotic ointment and surgical gauze.
