Genioplasty

Genioplasty

Genioplasty is a type of surgery performed on the chin. Both plastic surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (who work on the mouth and jaw) can perform this surgery. Genioplasty is often considered cosmetic surgery, meaning people choose it for appearance reasons rather than for a medical problem.

Types of Genioplasty:

    • Moving the chin forward
    • Moving the chin backward
    • Lateral changes for shifting and correcting asymmetry
    • Vertical changes, such as lengthening or shortening the chin

Method: To begin, the surgeon pulls down your lower lip and makes an incision in the gum beneath your lower teeth. Then, soft tissue is separated from the chin bone. The surgeon uses a saw to make a small vertical cut on the chin as a reference to ensure that the bone stays flat when moved forward or backward. A horizontal incision is then made along the chin bone. If your chin is being moved backward or made smaller, the surgeon will also cut a piece of bone. The bone is then shifted forward or backward, and screws and possibly a metal plate are attached to hold it in place. To lengthen the chin, the bone is reattached with a gap between the jaw and chin. The bone will grow over time to fill this gap. To shorten the chin, bone wedges are removed, and the chin is reattached to the rest of the jaw. The incision is then closed with sutures. The surgeon will apply a pressure bandage to the outside of the mouth and chin to protect the area during the initial healing phase.
