Adrenalectomy

Adrenalectomy

Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of the adrenal glands. These glands produce various hormones that regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar, and other essential functions. Most adrenal tumors are benign. However, surgery may be required if a tumor produces excess hormones, is larger than 2 inches (4–5 cm), or is suspected to be malignant.

Symptoms: Adrenal masses are often incidentally discovered during ultrasound. Most are benign and do not require surgery unless their size exceeds 4 cm initially or if they secrete hormones causing high blood pressure, excessive hair growth, or other hormonal disturbances.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: Surgeons may perform adrenalectomy through open surgery, minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques, or cryoablation. The recommended method depends on the tumor's size, type, or condition affecting the adrenal gland.

    • Minimally Invasive Adrenalectomy: Endocrine surgeons often use laparoscopic surgery to remove adrenal gland tumors due to the gland's relatively small size. Benefits include minimal scarring, reduced pain, and shorter recovery periods compared to open surgery.
    • Posterior Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy (PRA): In this alternative method to laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions in the patient’s back.
    • Open Adrenalectomy: Open surgery is typically used for large or malignant tumors, utilizing traditional tools and larger incisions.
