Large Hypospadias

Large Hypospadias

Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital defects during the development of the genital region, where the urinary meatus (opening of the urethra) is misplaced. It is best treated during childhood as neglecting it can lead to numerous issues, including urinary problems and sexual health concerns in adulthood. The severity of hypospadias is determined by the location of the urinary meatus; the closer it is to the tip of the penis, the milder the condition, while the closer it is to the scrotum, the more severe it becomes.

Symptoms: The condition is usually diagnosed during physical examinations after birth. In many cases, the skin at the distal part of the penis (removed during circumcision) is improperly formed on the underside.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: A catheter (stent) is usually inserted by the doctor into the urinary meatus to help maintain its shape during recovery. The catheter, made of soft, hollow material (rubber, silicone, or other substances), allows urine to be drained through it. The catheter remains in place for up to two weeks after hypospadias repair. The best time for this surgery is between 6 to 12 months of age, but the procedure can be performed at older ages based on the patient's condition, as determined by the specialist.
