Meatotomy

Meatotomy

Meatotomy is a surgical procedure performed on the penis to widen the urethral opening. It is commonly used to treat urethral meatal stenosis or urethral strictures. In some cases, the surgery is performed for cosmetic reasons or to enhance sexual satisfaction. Notably, meatotomy is typically performed voluntarily.

Symptoms: Narrowing of the urethral opening.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: Various techniques may be used, including cutting with scissors, cauterization, or surgical blades. Commonly, a clamp-and-cut technique is preferred to minimize bleeding. The physician may compress the frenulum using forceps for 60 seconds before making an incision. Depending on the anatomy and extent of the incision, techniques involving cutting may lead to significant bleeding, whereas crushing and cauterization methods are nearly bloodless. The procedure heals quickly, and unlike other genital modifications, the tissue of the penile urethra does not reattach or revert to its original shape.
