Radical Cystectomy

Radical Cystectomy

Cystectomy refers to the surgical removal of all or part of the bladder through an incision in the lower abdomen. The most common reason for cystectomy is the treatment of bladder cancer.

Symptoms: Blood in the urine, which often leads to a cystoscopy. A mass is identified and biopsied to determine its malignancy. If the tumor invades the bladder muscle, radical cystectomy is performed.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: During a radical cystectomy, the surgeon removes the entire bladder and surrounding tissues. In men, the surgeon almost always removes the prostate, seminal vesicles, and the vas deferens. In women (or those assigned female at birth), the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and cervix are typically removed. In some cases, portions of the vaginal wall may also be removed.
