Testicular Torsion

Testicular Torsion

Testicular torsion occurs when a testicle twists around the spermatic cord that supplies blood to it, causing sudden and severe pain. This condition most commonly occurs during male puberty and requires immediate medical attention. Treatment must be initiated within 6 hours to save the testicle, as prolonged interruption of blood flow can lead to necrosis and loss of the testicle.

Symptoms: Sudden, severe testicular pain.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: Surgical correction, or orchiopexy, is required to treat testicular torsion. Surgery is performed as quickly as possible to restore blood flow to the testicle. Under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision in the scrotum to untwist the spermatic cord and check the testicle for restored blood flow. Fine stitches are used to secure the testicle in the scrotum, preventing future torsion. If the blood flow has been cut off for more than six hours, the affected testicle may need to be removed.
