Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction (UPGO) Surgery

Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction (UPGO) Surgery

Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPGO) occurs due to congenital or acquired narrowing, often due to chronic urinary stones, at the junction of the upper ureter and the renal pelvis.

Symptoms: In neonates and infants, UPGO often presents with growth failure, recurrent urinary infections, and intermittent crying, especially after consuming fluids or milk. In adults, obstruction is frequently due to stones at the junction, leading to chronic, vague pain, a heavy feeling in the affected side, and exacerbated pain after consuming fluids. If left untreated, the affected kidney may lose its function entirely.

Treatment Method in the Hospital: The procedure is performed either laparoscopically or through open surgery. Before surgery, a CT scan with contrast and a nuclear scan (DPTA) are essential to confirm the diagnosis. After these tests, the patient is taken to the operating room. The patient is positioned on their side under general anesthesia, and a small incision is made beneath the ribs. The site of the narrowing is identified using surgical techniques. The narrowed section is then completely excised, and the ureter is reconnected to the expanded renal pelvis with sutures. During the procedure, a double-J catheter is placed.
