Urodynamic Testing

Urodynamic testing, also known as bladder testing, is a medical procedure used to evaluate the function of the bladder and urinary tract. It can help explain symptoms such as incontinence and others. Urodynamic testing provides a comprehensive assessment of bladder storage and emptying function. It also examines the performance of the urinary sphincter and urethra and their coordination with the bladder.

Symptoms: Urinary incontinence during coughing, sneezing, or straining, frequent urination, intense urgency to urinate, delay in starting urination, and feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

Treatment Method: A negative urine culture is required before performing the urodynamic test (absence of microbes in the urine sample). The patient is instructed to drink plenty of fluids two hours before the test to feel the urge to urinate. The first step is uroflowmetry, where the patient is asked to urinate into a uroflowmetry device. This step measures the volume of urine, flow rate, and the duration of complete urination. Next, cystometry is performed, where any remaining urine in the bladder is drained and measured using a very thin catheter. Then, a narrow catheter is inserted through the urethra into the bladder, and another is inserted into the rectum. Sensors at the ends of these catheters measure bladder and rectal pressures simultaneously. The bladder is then slowly filled with warm saline, and the patient is asked about the sensation of bladder fullness while coughing at regular intervals. In cystometry, bladder sensation, pressure, involuntary contractions, and bladder compliance are assessed. The test also evaluates potential urine leakage during coughing, the strength of the urinary sphincter, and the overall bladder function.
