(Intraoperative Radiation Therapy) IORT

The Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) linear accelerator is designed to assist in the treatment of cancer patients

In this therapeutic approach, radiotherapy waves are applied to the tissues surrounding the tumor in the operating room. This method is typically part of a treatment process that may include other modalities such as chemotherapy or external beam radiotherapy. Patients receive treatment with a dose of radiation immediately after tumor removal, while they are still under anesthesia. The advantages of using IORT in cancer treatment include a reduction in the overall treatment duration for patients, as a complete course of treatment can be condensed into a single intraoperative session, provided the patient can tolerate a high dose. Additionally, this method allows for direct and accurate distribution of the radiation dose to the tumor bed, as the radiation is delivered through direct visualization of the target.
