Linear accelerator

Linear accelerator

The linear accelerator (Linac) is a device primarily used for external radiation therapy in cancer treatment.

This machine uses microwave technology to accelerate electrons (similar to the technology used in radar). These electrons then collide with a heavy metal target, generating high-energy X-rays. A portion of these X-rays is collected and focused to be directed precisely at the patient's tumor. The radiation beams exit from a part of the accelerator known as thegantry, which is designed to rotate around the patient. The patient lies on a table, and the combination of gantry rotation and table movement allows the radiation to be delivered to the tumor from any angle.
