Cyclotron

Cyclotron

The cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator primarily used for the production of radioactive isotopes. Today, numerous cyclotrons exist worldwide, with their outputs utilized in radiology and nuclear medicine imaging. The nuclear medicine centers at Tehran University of Medical Sciences have successfully produced the first dose of the radioactive drug FDG (Fluorodeoxyglucose) using the cyclotron. The main application of FDG is in the diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with various cancers, as well as cardiovascular and neurological disorders. In these centers, specialists inject this radioactive drug and perform PET/CT scans to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy tissues. Additionally, these centers aim to produce other radiopharmaceuticals, including Gallium-68 DOTATATE, Gallium-68 PSMA, and therapeutic agents such as Lutetium-177 DOTATATE and Lutetium-177 PSMA.
