Bone Density Measurement

Bone Density Measurement

Bone densitometry, or bone density measurement, is a method used to assess the stiffness, hardness, and overall density of bones in the body. Although various techniques exist for measuring bone density, the most common method is Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). DEXA uses X-rays to measure bone density; higher bone density (indicating fewer pores and small gaps within the bone) absorbs more X-rays, allowing less radiation to pass through to the detector. The detected radiation is then sent to a computer, where it is converted into a bone density scale. The use of dual X-ray sources enhances measurement accuracy.
